Via Monkey I find this somewhat disturbing story.

Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and ‘pray to Allah’ during a religious education lesson.

Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped.

When I was at school I also had Religious Education lessons. They gave us background information on the religion, the theology, the practices, beliefs and methods of worship. They encouraged a level of tolerance and understanding, and while I can’t say that I found them particularly interesting or absorbing, no student was ever forced to take part in any prayer ritual.

I can’t help thinking what would have happened if the situation had been reversed: a couple of Muslim children had been forced to take part in a Christian prayer session. There would be war. Outraged parents of children would be coming to the school gates demanding apologies for insulting Islam, if they weren’t actually calling for a public execution. All manner of public figures would be lined up and wheeled out to express their astonishment that such a terrible turn of events could be allowed to pass; they would apologies from the bottoms of their shrivelled, blackened hearts and pledge that nothing like this would ever happen again. And chances are the childrens’ families would be given a substantial amount of compensation from the local authorities for the stress and indignity they had suffered.

But since this is simply two Christian kids, there will be little more than a few empty words from the head teacher, and maybe a councillor or two, and the whole incident will be swept under the carpet.
